That's it. The Maestro drivers only support PCM. No direct MIDI/FM synthesis.
Using Timidity should fill the gap nicely, though.

Good news. The Maestro 1 and 2 have been supported for some time. The Maestro
3 drivers are very new on the scene. (Word had it that ESS was being difficult,
refusing to release either drivers or specs. Whether that changed, or someone
managed to reverse-engineer a Maestro 3, I haven't heard.) The short of it is,
though, that the Maestro 3 is supported (such as it is) by kernel versions 2.4.0
and up, as well as 2.2.19 and up.
