The Yopy actually looks really, really cool. (I say "looks" because I
don't know of anyone who's used one yet. Still strictly vaporware as
far as anyone can tell.) The closest thing currently on the market is
the compaq iPAQ handheld device, which is a remarkably similar piece of
hardware. (Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the Yopy was prototyped on
Digital-ne`-Compaq's 'Itsy' project, which is also the father of the
iPAQ handheld.)
G-Mate has had some hiccups with the community at first, by not making
the source for their kernel easily available, but they rectified that
pretty quickly. The developers have been pretty good about answering
questions on their message boards, although the answers do sound, not
surprisingly, like badly translated Korean... :)
I'd really *really* love it if they released the source for their PIM
apps, as the iPAQ Linux port is in desperate need of something like
that. (Even if there's only a decent way of getting the binaries to run
on the iPAQ, I'd be happy.)
Unfortunately, nobody at G-Mate or Samsung (who are producing the
device) have commented on whether or not it will be available in the
U.S. market. If it is, I am definitely planning on getting one. If
not, I guess I'll have to try to get one imported. And no price has
ever been definitely set, although ~$500 has been mentioned here and
there.
(Although right now looking at gmate's website -
http://www.gmate.co.kr/ - I see you can buy a "discounted" developer
version for "only" $590, which is 25% off... I hope they don't go the
Newton path and price the units into extinction.)
Also unfortunately, since the hardware specs are so similar to the iPAQ
handheld, I have the feeling they will have some of the same issues with
their Linux port, namely getting power management that works on the
StrongARM platform, which for whatever reason has been hell on wheels
for the iPAQ team to get working properly.
