I've really had a lot of luck with Compaq desktops too. At least the
more recent models. I think it all boils down to a) Compaq finally
realizing that commodity components are cheaper and better in the long
run than trying to build proprietary chips, and b) Linux hackers are
finally catching up with all the "old" hardware that's out there and
rabidly looking around for new chips to make Linux work with so there's
just not much anymore that *doesn't* work under Linux.
And my laptop is a Compaq Armada and if it ever dies, I will be
extremely unhappy because I managed to buy it used from a friend of mine
for way way less than it would have cost new, or even refurbished, and
it's one of the nicest laptops for running Linux I've had the pleasure
of using.
