That's actually pretty standard practice in the console world. I think
Sony loses something like $150 on each PS2 sold. IIRC, Sega has been
the only company to actually sell their console (Dreamcast) for
reasonably close to what it cost them to make.
Console game companies make it up with licensing fees on each game sold
- of the price of each game, about $10-15 goes to the console maker.
That's why it's very important for a console to have a lot of really
good game titles; for example, if someone buys a PS2 (on which Sony will
lose $150) but then only buys three titles, in the end, Sony has lost
money on that customer.
