  The question doesn't contain any limits.
I bought a ISA (legacy) Digital Research sound card at 
Best Buy for $20 + tax 
Once I found the driver it works fine.
Crystal and a CTXXX number chip & circuit board, the number 
didn't match the correct LINUX sound driver (module).
I bought a `SB live value' locally for $60 W/O a spdif 
connector, (because it was white boxed) which I was 
counting on.  Sounds good, driver is still in development 
some day it will be great in spite of CL.
  I moved the D.R. ISA card to my niece's confusor to `up 
grade' her and the mic connection was dead, I put it my 
LINUX box and guess what, the mic connector/amp ?? is dead.
I will use it some day as a wav recorder on an old slow box 
with line input (and playback) only.

      I upgraded to LINUX, the more I use it, the more I love it.
        It doesn't do everything for you, you must program it.
