There are a vast number of both, many of which are built on top of UNIX
and UNIX-like systems. You would do well to do a Google search on
"Artificial intelligence and linux" or "linux expert system" and see
what pops up.

An interesting project is ALICE:

http://www.alicebot.org/

Something like the old "ELIZA" software, only much more extensible using
"AIML" which is a sort of AI-XML framework. There's actually a project
using the ALICE infrastructure using known quotes and references to try
to build an ALICEbot that acts like John Lennon. (A little odd, but
interesting nonetheless...)

Unfortunately, I suppose for the layperson, most AI and expert systems
research is just that - research, and so hard to get any concrete
information unless you start reading journals and attending workshops
and conventions.

Or to put it another way, there's a lot of interesting stuff happening,
but we're not going to see a HAL being built anytime soon.

Yes, this Derek-unit is functioning nominally. We thank you for your
concern. You will be assimilated.
