If the machine is doing this alot on startup and running apps I woulds
suspect that a DIMM is bad in the machine.
How ever it is also a good ideal to run a anti virus on any disk that you
tansfer from one machine to another.
Also what happens if you start it up under safe mode ?
To do this when starting Winows after you hear the beep of the machine hold
the F8 key select safe mode without networking.
Even though it is probably using Road Runner, DSL or even Dialup TCP/IP.
When it starts up if all is well check the drivers in device manager.
Also delete any files that are in the c:\windows\temp directory. Usually
under dos mode is the dos ode is best for this.
Not while under windows though. Because certain things loaded may be using
temp files.
Also blow out the files in the C:\windows\temporary internet files. Easy and
quick way right click on the Big blue e on windows Internet
explorer the clear history and temp internet files options.
Then after you do this I would delete any cookiies left in
c:\windows\internet temporary files directory buy using windows explorer.
Fianlly delete any .chk extension files in c:\ after you do this run ole
scandisk and see what it finds.
Also one other possibility to try .
IF this was fairly recent it started this if somethig hardware has been
added or changed of software you can restart the machine under dos mode and
run a util that is called scanreg at the dos prompt. IT will come
up with a list of the last sucessful starts I usually would choose one from
about a week prior tell it restore. Notice any changes you made from after
that up to now will be lost. As the re writes your registry.
