I've done something along these lines in the past. At Simon Property Group, I designed an "imaging system" of various GNU components. I built a good Linux install (It was an ICA client fyi) then turned it into a tarball. I then used sfdisk, tar, and lilo to deploy the "image" it was a great solution IMHO, I built 50+ workstations with it. (We then shifted to a Compaq T1000 solution, and my ICA box was ditched :-( ) I may still have that shell script, hit me offline and I'll look through my archives for it.
