When I first incorporated my business this past May, I started
asking around about business-oriented, full-up general ledger (GL)
type accounting/bookkeeping applications. What I got was a few
GnuCash comments and a crapload of "peanut gallery" type
Quickbooks/Peachtree responses.

With just a little research, I found a number of options, both free
and commercial.

I ended up finding and standardizing on a quite feature complete,
networked, multiuser and full-up SQL-based accounting system in SQL
Ledger (http://www.sql-ledger.org). It is a full GL/bookkeeping
application with AP/AR, inventorying, invoicing and all kinds of
other details. It is easy to use stunnel to make it SSL-based
and/or tunnel over SSH, so I can access my accounting system
remotely (and it uses less bandwidth than and is more responsive
than using VNC over SSH to a "traditional" application).

It amazes me how quick people go back to using what they know and
assuming everyone else just uses non-Linux/OSS solutions. I, for
one, am working on a Linux-based "diagnostic partition" distro that
you install on all new hard drives that will let you do all kinds of
things (like connect to a remote AFS/NFS/SMB server and bring down a
cloned image). It also uses XOSL as a boot loader.
