You're probably aware that Microsoft recently made a big deal of going
in the direction of being more secure in their software. Here's an
article from the Real Pros on what Microsoft needs to actually do:

While reading the article, think about why Microsoft designs things the
way they do. They attempt to make the computer universally connected and
completely transparent to the user. The problem is that this makes
building a secure system almost an impossibility. They contrast this
approach with the way Unix (and by implication Linux) does things-- you
only install and turn on what you need, and each service is a discrete
install. There's much more to the article that just this, though.
