Oh, and then you have to set the passwords once the file has been created!
Just like setting passwords in the /etc/passwd file: smbpasswd <user name>

Set encrypt passwords to yes in the global section of smb.conf and set the
smbpasswd file path in there as well.
make sure you create a new smb.password file with the command:
 cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > <the path to your smbpasswd file>
and then check to see that your windows workstations are using encryped
passwords.
  Oh, and stop and start samba. We do want it to read the new smb.conf file!
