I've had good luck with the various Soundblaster PCI models and ALSA. I
think the two we've been using at work very successfully are the
"Soundblaster16 PCI" and "Soundblaster 128". (The specific one in my
box is the CT4810.) They're cheap and work well. Check the ALSA
website for compatible chipsets since Creative makes about a thousand
different card models with different chips...
