[SLUG] /var/log entries

I am undertaking the task of shortening the log entries in /var/log and
elsewhere. My first log is the boot.log. there are 5 of these from
boot.log through boot.log.4. I would like to limit this to two files and
limit the size of each of these but I do not know where they are generated.
Can anyone point me to the script that generates these logs?
