your NIC. They do have linux drivers on it.

Boy o boy ... I _thought_ I recalled using that driver! Oh well, I am in
the
middle of a compile using the DECtulip driver (the associated help file
mentions that it runs 'some' Linksys cards). If it doesn't work, then
I'll
give your suggestion a try.
modules/config for the old installation (I made a boot disk 'just in
case'
:-)) shows "alias eht0 tulip" so I think that pretty much nails it.
