The native format for the OpenOffice wordprocessor *is* XML; the sxw 
files are zip archives of XML (see below).  You should be able to unzip 
the sxw file, and voila, you have your XML file(s).  Even though the 
format is XML, I suspect that it will probably be pretty ugly XML from 
the viewpoint of hands-on editing (e.g. vi).
