[SLUG] Directory copying question

After I have partitioned a drive and made filesystems on the necessary
partitions, am I correct that when I copy a directory, cp -a, from the old
disk to the new, I need to only mount the partition I am copying the
directory to? That is, all other partitions on the disk are umounted?
This makes sense, but I question if there is something I am missing.
