Have you stopped the VNC server. As I recall, any sessions started will
remain on the server and will confuse the issue if you try to login as
the same user on the console. There is a way to login as a second
session on the console but it is then running a double session, one on
top of the other. Try stopping VNC altogether and seeing what happens.

Subject: [SLUG] XFree86 re-install
I am looking for some XFree86 re-install direction,
(web sites, etc.)
In the never-ending pursuit of being me and doing
boneheaded things, I attempted to replicate my GNOME
session over VNC on my windows laptop. It 'kinda'
worked, but now my linux box doesn't properly create a
gnome panel and is been rendered alltogether stupid.
XFree86 has even been known to crash a time or two
upon starting it. Hohum. Any guidance would be
excellent.
Regards,
-Matt
