I have to agree that XDMCP is a great way to go on a private network. For a while, I had my wife using a 486 whose display was exported from my k6-2 machine via XDMCP. It allowed her to have an X11 desktop (she likes afterstep) with near the responsiveness that I experienced locally. This was on a 10Mbit lan.
