that's almost certainly the issue.

My recommended workaround, rather than trying to diddle around with
cables inside your PC - and these CD-audio cables are notorious for
having lots of different types of connectors based on vendor and are
usually expensive and hard to find - would be to stick the CD in the
drive, rip to MP3/Ogg, then play the MP3/Ogg files.

Plus, that way you never have to put that CD back in the drive.
