No. You must do this as root. If you're logged in as jared, then it won't
work. Unless you change permissions on postmaster, but I don't recommend
that.

So....the process is: login as the root user. Then su postgres (no pw), then
createuser or adduser or whatever (your prompt should be different than the
one you used as root). This will allow access to postgres as a regular user,
and by the way, the basic client for postgres is psql...play with it and see
if you can login as jared to that.
