At the last Dunedin meeting, and the one before, the topic of which distro
would one recommend came up. This is an open ended question and mostly
depends on each persons needs and likes, but for those who deem support,or
help, most important I would recommend SuSE.
To set things let me refresh. In a meeting about 7-8 months ago I was relating
my experience with SuSE 8.1 Pro and stated that I was having a problem and
SuSE wasn't much help in resolving it. Seems that my puter would lock
up(remember this) like a virgin at a biker bar, I mean nada, nothing,it would
flat out freeze up and nothing but a push the power button to off would do
anything. Well there was quite a few email back and forth with SuSE and altho
they were answering the email there was nothing that could be done to get the
box working properly. Finally I just emailed them and said that I was
switching to something that would work( ended up being Debian). After that
email I received a reply from Marissa Krupa at SuSE and she was very nice and
stated that even though is seemed that SuSE could not resolve the problem,
(and partly that was my fault because every time it froze up I tried a
re-install with diff perameters there were no logs to send) she was willing
to send me the next release gratis to see if that would work as a repayment
for having paid for SuSE 8.1 Pro that I couldn't use and gave away at a
meeting.
Well SuSe 8.2 arrived by Fed-Ex overnight the Pro version, true to her word. I
installed SuSE 8.2 and used a selective install from the menu, all is well.
8.2 has been up and running for like 3 days solid and not even a burp. It was
a smooth install and no probs at all. The new release even has the sticker,
they were missing for awhile, not a sheet of them but one single sticker. But
this is just background, the reason for all this is simply to say that 8.2
comes with 2 very good manuals(fat and full), 5 cds and 2 dvds so you really
get your moneys worth. Mostly with SuSE you get SuSE and the support. I mean
if they cant fix it they replace it, in these times thats saying alot.
The SuSe distro does seem to offer something that the others don't seem to be
willing to give without cost and that is support, they even list phone
numbers. You can actually talk to someone and it doesn't cost you --- I mean
there are limitations to this but still when you get a set of very good
manuals and a for real support I cant see why one would select a distro other
than SuSe, especially as a newbie or one who is still in the beginning stages
of Linux.
With very complete manuals(almost worth the price of the distro) and a good
support system I cant see recommending any other distro. I don't mean for
this to seem like a commercial or like Im peddling distros on the side but I
am totally amazed at the support and the fact that SuSe would stand behind
their product in such a manner in these times, they get my money as future
releases come out.
Not my 2 cents worth this was at least a dime and for those not interested Im
sorry I used your time, to those still looking for a distro something to
ponder,
