WD: they go offline for no reason and never come back but they are still
spinning
IBM: they go offline for no reason and never come back but i hear the click
and spin-down
others: similar problems as well as varying degrees of longevity and noise

before you ask:
APM is disabled in BIOS and i have experienced this with several different
power supplies
