Not informed ones. Joe Barr is interviewing Warren, the Fedora founder,
for NewsForge a little later tonight. Story in the next day or two.
My buddy Jeremy Hogan says it's all good, that this will help keep RH
free for SOHO users, give everyone nice downloadable Linux with a name
brand that won't conflict with RH trademarks, blah blah blah. Jeremy
does PR for Red Hat, though, so we take his words with large chunks of
salt (although he has never lied to me and is a pretty good guy).
Reality is probably that separating "commercial" and "non-commercial"
development is necessary for Red Hat and other Linux distributors'
survival and growth.
I notice that Mandrake is now releasing their latest stuff to paid Club
members first (who can then repost or mirror if they wish), which is
simply good business sense. I always though it was stupid that you could
download Mandrake before you could buy the CDs. I've said this to Gael
and Jacques a number of times over the years. Finally they're listening.
I would really like to see them do well -- or better yet, merge with SuSE.
FYI, I have not found Red Hat to be the best/easiest distro for home
users for at least 4 years now. But that's just me. :)
