Try shift-keypad - and shift-keypad + .

What I have in ~/.Xresources is:

*font: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-*-25-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
*boldfont: -*-lucidatypewriter-bold-*-*-*-25-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XTerm*font1: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XTerm*font2: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-*-17-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XTerm*font3: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XTerm*font4: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-*-11-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XTerm*font5: -*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-8-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XTerm*font6: -*-nil-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

I didn't memorize those font names; I used copy&paste from xfontsel. The
"*" in "*font" matches any application and display where the standard
"foo.:0:0.font" resource is used. At least I think that's how it goes.
Same for "*boldfont". If you change ~/.Xresources, and your changes
aren't immediately effectual, do "xrdb -merge < .Xresources".

Try shift-KP[+-] first, to see if you like a font that's already chosen.
You can use "xrdb -query | grep -i 'xterm.*font'" to pull it out. If you
want xterm to use the same default font as everybody else, make sure
there's no "XTerm*font" defined.
