I encountered a situation of samba server do a reverse IP lookup when the
router went down. One the link to the internet (I assume the DNS server)
was restored al returned to normal.

Russ:
Have you taken a look at the samba logs? When a machine connects your
should see a per-host log inside /var/log/samba. Check the host log and
the smbd.log file.

If you have a WinXP master browser it may be possible that some
contention is occurring between them. Try specifically turning off the
functions in Samba that support becoming a master or local browser. Try
using ethereal to sniff the wire on the RH9 machine during connection
attempts. This will give you a better idea of what sort of traffic is
tying up the connection.

Are you on a switch or hub? If the latter, try using a switch instead.

Kwan

I have Redhat 9.0 installed fully updated. I have samba installed and it is
allowing connections from our Windows XP workstations. However it is dog
ssssllooowwww (slow). i'm getting a little over a 1 mb per minute transfer
rate.

What i've done so far:

Ive adjusted the socket settings in smb.conf but I am still not getting any
better throughput.
socket options = SO_SNDBUF = 8192 SO_RCVBUF = 8192 \
IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_KEEPALIVE

I confirmed that the eth0 card is running at 100 mbps using ethtool but
still
no improvement.

Any suggestions before I have to stick my foot any deeper in my mouth?

Regards
Russ
