I started out years ago registering them solely in their names. My theory was
that there are a lot of web folks that were maybe not on the up and up (mid
90's) and they used this as a hammer to make sure they got paid and that the
client was pretty much stuck with them. They also passed on a hefty fee for
doing this and charged a high ( $100 + ) monthly lease for the site. Every
time they turned around it seemed they had their hand in the clients pocket.
I naively vowed to be different and more on the up-and-up.

Experience is a harsh teacher.

I found most clients could not understand the Network Solutions emails and
none of them could successfully complete a renewal. Since they usually
waited till the last day to call me and tell me they had failed, this
required a quick trip to their site so I could send the email for them.

Later I got away from Network Solutions. Other easier to use naming services
cropped up and offered much lower rates for the same name.

Being hardheaded, I decided that NetSol was the main culprit and continued
registering new sites in the clients name. Many times a web site still did
not get renewed because the owner put it off and then forgot about it.

Even with an easy to use service ( I use Directnic.com ) the clients dropped
the ball. I shifted almost all the sites I work on into my name so I can
keep them from lapsing. This makes moving servers much much easier.

Oh - and my poor opinions of web folk that charged what I thought were high
fees for low cost services? I have found that perhaps they were sharp
business people. Most clients I have met eat up a lot of time or expect a
lot of services they didn't pay for.
