For low memory or tight fits, either Slackware or FreeBSD will do
nicely. With both their installers, you can fine-grain the install,
picking only what you really want. Running X, you'll need more
memory for the full KDE desktop, so just install the libraries and
the couple of KDE apps you want, and then run a light-weight window
manager like fvwm or fluxbox. Slack 8.1, or 9.0 or FreeBSD 4.8 (or
even NetBSD 1.6.1!) are good, tight versions to use.

The winmodem may be a problem, and you may need to look into a
"real" modem to replace it. I have a prereference for a good
external modem, using your system's perfectly functional (and
usually disabled) serial ports, but that's just me...

And as others have pointed out, /check that memory!/. I've seen
installs die from bad mem sticks.
