Two weeks ago at Circuit City. Look for a modem that says it'll work
with *anything* other than Windows, i.e. Mac or DOS, and it will almost
certainly work with Linux even if it doesn't say so on the box or in
sales blurbs.

Better (unless you need a modem *right now* and must buy retail/local) =
Use Google's new "Froogle" shopping search engine with the keywords
"Linux + modem" (and "external" or "pcmcia" if you like) and you'll see
so many choices that you'll have trouble picking one. There may not be
all that many Linux users here in the Silicon Swamp, but worldwide there
are millions -- enough to be a sizable market for hardware makers.

It's wise to check Linux compatibility before you buy hardware;
otherwise you're like a Windows user bollixed when his or her software
fails to install on a Mac. And Froogle is a great help here.
