I got it working. Thank you Rob and Ian. I believe it was a physical layer
problem with using the crossover cable. Rob, your idea of using a hub
worked, as the linksys router (wireless) I slapped in seemed to be
responsible for correct negotiation between the two computers' network cards.
It automagically enabled pinging, so I celebrated for 2 minutes, then
successfully got NFS shares and a wireless network going within a couple
hours. Now I have to tighten up the security...
