I believe that "gie me (object)" is somehow related to "gimmie (object)",
though the former doesn't have the childish connotations of the later.
Perhaps a subconscious aversion to the letter 'v'.

Actually, English 'v' seems like a pretty rare sound in other
indo-european languages, being not unlike a 'b' in at least a few
romance languages...
