I'd look at mondo for backup. It backs up to cd, and I bet it wouldn't
be much trouble to adapt it to DVD. For that matter it may natively do
so already.

Although it has been a while since I rebuilt the kernel, it really
wasn't that difficult as I remember. If you are just going to build the
module, it should be even easier. I would go with a distro you are more
comfortable with and jump through the extra hoops at the gate to get it
running smoothly with the module. Otherwise you may be regretting the
decision every time you have to work on it and have to remember how that
distro does things again. etc.
I've never worked with SATA HD so I can't give any hints on what works
best though.
