Sorry folks for having to reply to my own posting but in my own defense it is
not MY DSL line.

The Issue proved to be a faulty router which apparently was infected with some
sort of microscopic wiggle stuff.

After reinstalling the router software and reconfiguring the system - ALL NOT
by me - the system is up and running - well maybe.
