I have can think of a couple of things.

A. Wifi it is perfectly fine if you know how to properly secure it

B. take cat5e and you can wrap it in some thik heatshrink tubes.

Funny thing is that Cat 5e is the new defacto in telephone systems.
Also when verizon gets fiber going is they show cat 5e leaving from
the Opitical interface device out side to the the inside into a your
router/switch.

If you want to do your own custom lenghts i know of a great place
with high quality cable that is cheap price
