That's for "packeting writing" -- which is a PITA IMHO. It's great for
DVD-RAM (stock kernel since 1998) or DVD+RW (via those tools/support),
but when I want to record, I want a recording program.
That's where the forked CDRTools patches come in. They seem to work
great with both Pioneer DVD-R drives as well as latter gen DVD-RAM
drives.
