Checksum only tells you when a file is bad. If you gzip an archive,
like tar does, then you're toast.

Stick with either tape, RRD (removable rigid disk), WORM (CD-R, DVD-R)
or MO w/verify (DVD-RAM).

Well, MO is far more immune to environment than even WORM. There is a
clear plastic cover over the actual MO media. DVD-RAM takes it one step
further by offering a cartridge option (but not required).
