[SLUG] Gnome can't start for normal, non-root users

Also, when I go into KDE and open a terminal as a normal user, I get this
strange output:

ejahn@meteor:~$ gnome-control-center

** (gnome-control-center:13583): WARNING **: Couldnot find directory of
control panels [preferences:///]

How does one fix this? Is it a permissions thing? I think if I fix this,
gnome will start as a normal user. I've even tried creating a new user and
reinstalling gnome packages, but no luck. Thanks!
