If you are up to it, maybe give Linux From Scratch a try. Last time I
went through it, the process is to install to a fresh partition from a
host Linux system. The result is very lean and you get a chance to
tweak as you go along. One thing you may consider is tweaking to limit
anything that might write to disk often, like logging or /tmp and /var
setup. Flash memory is usually rated for so many writes per cell.
