If you do that, XP will recreate new security Ids and the old ones (attached
to your apps and user folders) will become invalid. Save that as a last
resort.

This could be hardware, driver or Netscape related. If you have a backup,
consider restoring that first. You might try removing Netscape via
"Install/Remove Programs" in Control Panel. Reboot, and it that solves it,
try reinstalling Netscape (or replacing it). Also, consider your connection
method - NIC, Wireless or modem. Any way to check/replace that hardware?

If the PC came with a "System Recovery" disc, you might tell it to "repair"
the installation. Usually that will just recopy files. Of course, that
will blow away all your security updates, so unplug it from the internet
before you do that.

Replacing the OS is the easy way out, but I've never had to do that on any
NT-based OS.

OK, guys, I've done it now. Any windoze experts among you?

Netscape 7.2 apparently hung, became non-responsive. So, we closed it, and
the Netscape window was no longer there in the taskbar, implying that it was
closed. The mouse pointer could be moved all over the desktop but when it
was moved over the taskbar, which was visible, the pointer changed to an
hourglass.
I then noticed multiple Netscape icons in the tray, even though we thought
the program was closed. Ctrl-Alt-Del brought up the task manager which
indicated no instance of Netscape running in the Applications tab, but I did
notice a Netscape entry in the Processes tab. I selected it and clicked End
Process. XP then was busy for a while, trying I suspect to get rid of the
icons in the tray. After some time waiting, without success, I brought up
the TaskManager window again and clicked Shutdown from the File Menu.
That's when I foobared it.

Now the moron keeps rebooting over and over again. I get a very quick (1/2
second) blue screen and at some point in the reboot I see and click OK on a
message window indicating that Windoze had to replace part of the registry
with a file somewhere.

Pressing F8 on boot, and selecting last known good boot, safe mode, debug
mode, or any other of the options does not help.

My question is this: Can boot off the XP install CD and re-install without
mucking up all my non-OS files?

Or can you suggest a better way to get this pos working again?

(Please don't tell me to install Linux. It's my sweety's machine and all
her work files are on it.)
