I agree with W. R. S. on this one. Cd's aren't even the best medial
by which to enjoy your favorite tunes. That's exactly why new music was
readily available on 33-rpm 12" even into the later nineties--a
non-scratched lp sounds remarkably better than a cd. I'm looking
forward to the accelerated prevalence of audio dvd's, and also would
like to experiment with doing some burning in the same vein. There are
still tons of free mp3's, and ones to buy as well for an alternative to
purchasing cd's.
Cd's may be overpriced considering how small the cost of production
is, but consider how cheap they are by comparison to what music used to
cost. What was the average household income in the 20's? At that time,
a 78 was about eight bucks! AND, it only had two songs on it!
Considering that, with today's average income, even eighteen bucks a pop
is downright frugal for a cd.
Music piracy is wrong. That being said, what Sony did was also
wrong. The beautiful part is that we don't have to buy their stupid
cd's, anyway! If you like the music, you can CHOOSE to buy it, but it
IS still a luxury item, and you may choose not to support them. I like
underground indie-rock, and you can get TONS of that stuff free online
legitimately. There is also quite a bit of it that you can purchase on
vinyl.
The bottom line is I don't see this DRM deal as a major problem. It
is little more than an annoyance in the grand scheme of things. They
screwed up. It's not the first time in big business, and it won't be
the last. The tango of free commerce continues. They push, we
respond. We push, they react...
