[SLUG] using ide cdrom when booting from a sata drive (debian sarge)

Well I managed to get debian sarge installed and booting off of a sata drive.
For the most part it works great. Unfortunatly the ide cdrom drive
does not work, and if I connect a regular ide drive to the other ide
bus, it's not detected under linux either.

Here's the kicker, this is only an issue with the 2.6 kernel, if I
boot off of the 2.4 kernel (yes the default kernel for debian sarge
is still 2.4), I can see all my regular ide devices.

Any ideas as how to see the ide cdrom drive under 2.6 (it's actually 2.6.8-2)?
