O.K....lets get something straight. A few things in the way of SuSE....
1, you are downloading a free copy (by your own admission on this list)
intended for home desktop users. 2, if you had actually paid the 59.95
at the store you would have gotten the hard copy beautifully printed
docs which would have probably been easier for YOU to read.

But most importantly, SuSE carries a product called SLES (SuSE Linux
Enterprise Server) that has support and includes a lot of extra tools
that make administration for many things easier. I guess you're judging
the enterprise server version....right?? Because that is the product
that most businesses would use. However, there are only minor
differences between the two and MySql is not one of them.
You want hand holding?? I'll give it to you. This weekend I'm going to
set your OOffice MySql thing up at home and give you a step by step for
SuSE 10. I'll bet I can do it in 10 steps or less leaving nothing out.
It's not hard. You are just not reading the included SuSE
documentation. This is the only conclusion I can draw because if you
read it properly, you would not be having these problems. The SuSE
docs are very much hand holding. Not to mention that MySql is sooooo
widely used that they spend a lot of time making sure it's easy to set
up.

So you bought SuSE?? Otherwise Cheap charlie gave you a fully
operational car for free, including the owners manual ON THE BACK SEAT
and you decided to try to drive the car in your infinite wisdom without
realizing that this was a hybrid car that you have to learn to drive it
differently than the Ford (Windows)(....insert shameless Chevy plug) you
previously knew how to drive. You're going to be amazed at how simple
this is come this weekend. If you still need help after the step by
step, Then get somebody else who read the manual to DRIVE THE CAR FOR
YOU.

People are at this state because you are not giving any kind of proper
feedback. Instead of complaining about things try posting _exactly_
what you are doing and what you've done.
And again, changing distros doesn't help any of this. All you are
doing is adding more stuff to have to learn before you can get down to
the real thing you want to accomplish. All the distros can handle
mysql. I'm sure of it. Stick with what you know best.
