The old CCNA model (over 2 or 3 years ago, the -607 I believe)
just had only a radio-button type test. The current test will have you
also do a couple of simulations where you are given an interface and
have to diagnose and fix a fault. These are weighted somewhat
higher than the "radio button" questions. The cutoff to pass is
around 85% and by all acccounts is somewhat more challenging
than it used to be, and the failure rate is high
I would think that books alone would prepare a candidate well
enough to pass the old test but today I think hands-on on
some real hardware would be called for.
Your interesting config has a few options I hadn't seen, the latest
IOS I used in my small lab (at home) was 12.2 JS-L enterprise.
I found some 250n's on ebay from a virtual rack hosting service
that was upgrading, the 2501 series won't support 100 Mbit
ethernet or VoIP but if you get a newer IOS** you can learn 90%
of what you need hands-on. I haven't looked recently but should
be little trouble finding some 12.2 with 16 meg ram and 16
flash (needed to support the enterprise image which lets you
do anything). I think it is the 2507 that has 2 ethernet interfaces
(you need a AUI transceiver as well) or else you need some
cabling (DB-60 DCE to DTE for loop) or a pair of CSU-DSU
(V.35 to DB-60) with a crossover, you can find Astrocom NX-1
units for about 10 bucks. This is an interesting way to wire
the serial ports as you can change the number of DS-0's
(1 to 24) and change the throughput and see how it changes
the metrics on the routing protocols, (IGRP, RIP etc).
**be aware of licensing issues
There used to be a Cisco User group in town but it fell apart.
There is an active one in Orlando that meets monthly at
the Cisco office in the research park off of Alafaya Rd
north of Colonial.
