Ah, that is a great question.

In the old days, the software component was a huge drag on performance.
Today, I've not seen it to be a limiting factor. If it is, you'll see it
affect the entire window, not the line vs background. After you study the
static image, start moving the window very slowly in small circles. Observe
the line quality vs background. If you move it fast enough, you'll see the
window either tear or lose the ability to refresh the screen contents. On
my PC, I have to move the windows really fast before I see a tear. And this
is on a Athlon XP 1.6 GHz, nVidia 4200, and nVidia's driver. Your mileage
may vary...
