OK. What I meant to do was

old:

   Primary---hda = HD #1
           |
           +-hdb = HD #2

Secondary---hdc = DVD #1 (R/W)
           |
           +-hdd = DVD #2 (R)

new:

   Primary---hda = HD #1
           |
           +-hdb = nothing

Secondary---hdc = DVD #1 (R/W)
           |
           +-hdd = HD #2

I didn't move any master/slave jumpers. That means your hypothesis is:

new:

   Primary--- no other drive
           |
           +-hdb = HD #2 <-- slave but no master

Secondary---hdc = DVD #1 (R/W)
           |
           +-hdc = HD #1 <-- two masters on the same bus

root@pc:~# hdparm -i /dev/hd[a-d]

/dev/hda:

  Model=IC35L120AVV207-0, FwRev=V24OA63A, SerialNo=VNVD00G4CD51GX
...

/dev/hdc:

  Model=_NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A, FwRev=2.17, SerialNo=

# DVD #1, (R/W)
...

/dev/hdd:

  Model=IC35L120AVV207-0, FwRev=V24OA66A, SerialNo=VNVD06G4CYA17L

Looks right to me. Should have made a note of the SNs before, then I could
be sure.

Even if magic happened and they rejumpered themselves, the drive that is now
hda is going bad, so that's the one that needs to be replaced.
