Consider that support includes fixing problems and as such patches.
There will be interim updates in the form of service packs and all of
the patches are available as source packages that will need to be
installed manually. That $50 per year get's you instant access to every
patch and the update mechanism that is included with SLED 10.

If "free" as in no cost is what you are looking for, openSUSE 10.1 is
really what you want. The difference is the licensed code that Novell
pays for is not included in openSUSE 10.1.
