That sounds nontrivial.

I'd suggest reading up on the Prototype JavaScript framework popular with and
distributed with Rails, but fully functional in its own right. It ought to
ease the development effort when implementing the required functionality to
perform your desired actions.

It's possible I can be more vague with less information, perhaps by removing
the word 'javascript' from the original post.
