Yes, and that is indeed the primary purpose of directories, be it
eDirectory, Active Directory, OpenLDAP or whatever. Looking up phone
numbers or bible verses seem like a cute parlor trick, but not nearly
as useful to a small/medium business as centralized authentication and
authorization.

Whether it is worth the effort for you to set up, only you can answer.
Our pilot OpenLDAP project took a month to set up and get working
initially, but then was deployed without much ado. Management tools
seem to lag far behind the commercial alternatives, however.
