I use lilo, but same idea. I booted with the option "single", I think that replaces all the kernel options, not appends to them, right? If so, there would be no "quiet". There's definitely no "splash".

Yeah, I normally just fix problems as they occur (rolling my own kernel as required) and upgrade distros if the computer's irrevocably hosed, but I'll check that out. That is, once I have a computer with a net connection and a CD burner...

I booted with "init=/bin/sh" and added "set -x" as the first non-comment line in /etc/profile, but saw nothing. Apparently it's before that, maybe somewhere in /etc/inittab.
