The idea is that usually connecting via imap gets you a full listing of
the folders contained on the server side
 and not just your "Inbox" so it saves you the step of logging in via
the web. Depends on how they have it configured.

The forwarding is optional. I'm guessing in his case he uses foo
account that he has more robust control over (vs verizon) to filter
bar's mail.

I've been playing with imap lately and use the config files to hide
folders that squirrelmail creates. Say you can somehow even connect via
imap.... if they have the SpamDetector folder hidden, you're still out
of luck.

On the other hand, if you can just disable their filter as Robin
mentioned, then you can go back to using SpamAssassin locally as you
have in the past.
