OK, so what do you think he was asking of MS? What's your theory on MS
thinking they needed to send in the lawyers?

If your assumption was correct, there would be no need for him to ask
permission. Since he did ask for something, and MS felt the need to send in
the lawyers, don't you think it was likely that he did not have enough
licenses?

By "one copy", I mean "one licensed copy". But I posed it as a question,
because I'd like to know more.

Reading between the lines, it creates the impression the they might have
installed a single license on 50 PCs and were caught. MS is a public
company and the managers have a fiduciary duty to the stockholders to
protect their property. They would have no choice but to send in the
lawyers. But rather than jump to conclusions, I'd like Pete to clarify.
